Electric water heaters get a bad rap. They are always thought about like the one you have to settle for when you can’t get a better source of fuel. They are consistently cited as being less efficient than natural gas or propane. However, what’s often overlooked is the fact that they work, and they work well. An electric water heater will still go a great job providing hot water for your home. Depending on what your design constraints are, electric might even be the superior choice for your home.
Electric water heaters have several distinct advantages over the competition. They are easy to install. All you have to do is plug them in, and you are good to go. There are no extra lines to run or outdoor tanks to install. You can install them anywhere you can get electricity, which is anywhere in your home. Not having gas also means that they are safer. There is nothing that could potentially explode. There is nothing that could leak and cause safety problems.
Water heaters are designed to perform too. Yes, they might not have as fast of a recovery rate, but they heat water no problem. Modern electric water heaters still come with: polyurethane foam insulation, a polybutylene tank with a layered fiberglass exterior, automatic thermostats to set different standby temperatures for different times of the day, and they have safety mechanisms to prevent dry firing when the tank is dry.
If you live somewhere, that doesn’t have gas. Then you are down to propane and electric. If you don’t have the space for a large tank around your house, electric is going to be your best option. You won’t have any containers to fill, any exhaust to worry about, and as long as you pay your electric bill, you will always have hot water.
